Success Story: Jennifer Therrien
A little about me: I've been a life-long athlete. I swam in college, started doing triathlons post-college, and eventually starting running half marathons. Then, I got married, started working from home full time, stopped racing, and gained 50 lbs. Then, I got pregnant, gained 45 more lbs, and had a c-section.
I tried to start running programs (joints were too achy).
I joined Weight Watchers (too much logging).
I attempted "weight loss challenges" with friends (shared more wine than weight loss with those friends!).
I found workout buddies (who demotivated me if they couldn't meet up).
My crossfit journey started six months after having my son, and at 212 lbs, I could barely do a sit up. I had a hard time getting up off the floor. I started at 2 classes per week, and typically couldn't finish the workouts. Still, I felt an huge difference really quickly. My joint pain disappeared over the first 2 months as I strengthened the muscles that supported them. Over the course of the year, I moved to 3 classes a week, then 4, and now 5.
Fast forward to a year later. I'm down 30 lbs and have lost 5 inches off my waist. I just finished my first beginner's competition! Most importantly --- I'm injury free. I'll say that again, healthy, strong, and injury free.
A huge part of the success is having the personal determination to make it happen, but there is so much more to it.
You have to find the right gym and coaches for you. Josh and Craig will modify every movement/workout so that you can do it and be simultaneously challenged by it. They won't let you try something you're not ready for, and that's what keeps you injury free. These guys have taken me from modifying sit ups, to training for a competitive event. Whatever your goal is, they'll coach you to reach it.
I also realized that I need a support system. Weight loss is an incredibly lonely experience, and workout buddies are great... until they bail on you. At Silver Star, you're joining a family and we're pretty dang cool (and we won't bail on you). You'll see the same names on the board every day, and there will always be someone to give you a high five. Our other members get me through those rough workouts and keep me coming back every day.
Overall, I absolutely recommend Silver Star to anyone looking try Crossfit - whether for weight loss, muscle building, or competition. They've given me my life back, and I'm incredibly thankful to have found them.
